? has been or is in course of being adopted by all the local companies.

Abrogation of this Ordinance would cause the most serious inconvenience, and would lead to the demand by the British mercantile public in China for the registration of Companies by this Court.

In regard to the Board of Trade's suggestion that the annual duty should only be chargeable on the amount of the shares in the local registry and not on the total amount of the company's capital I am informed by Mr. Duncan McNeill, who was acting as Crown Advocate when the agitation for some such arrangement began and who is well acquainted with all its details, that the local registers of the Companies affected by this Ordinance include all the shares, and that only a copy of the Register is kept at Hongkong. There are associations with a Register in Hongkong and a Branch Register here e.g. the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, but in this case the local register is kept under the Bank's own Ordinance and under a decision of the Supreme Court of Hongkong and not under this Ordinance.
